Valentina Franzoni is Associate Professor of Computer Science at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, University of Perugia, Italy, where she teaches Affective Computing —one of the first courses in Italy on this topic at both PhD and MSc level— Artificial Intelligence, and Human–Computer Interaction, and she serves as deputy for the Rector's delegate for AI, with specific responsibility for Affective Computing, Ethics and social impact of AI. Her research interests span from emotion recognition, semantic similarity measures, link prediction, and the ethics of AI, to ethical applications in crowd emotions, animal emotions, biology, health and wellbeing. She founded and leads EMORE (Emotions and Multidisciplinary-Oriented Research on Ethical and Responsible AI) Lab, through which she contributes to cross-disciplinary projects applying AI to underrepresented languages, pain recognition in NICU, narrative medicine, emotion recognition for the prevention of online abuse, digital twins for smart cities, and VR for biology. She is strongly involved in promoting the safe and socially beneficial use of AI.
